Amazing Facebook data visualisation – one picture captures 500 million relationships

Visual communication is an important skillset for marketers in the context of digital public relations.

Images can be processed much more quickly than the written word and can be a more effective method of communicating messages and information.  It has an important role to play in story telling and represents a missed opportunity for the PR industry up to now, as Penny explains in this post.

We’re always interested in great examples of visual communication, which is why this data visualisation by Facebook intern Paul Butler caught our eye.  Representing 500 million social connections is no mean feat but it has been done beautifully here.

The nature of a story is both compelling and entertaining so, when combined with a visual – the impact is even greater. From road signs to map legends to instruction booklets, we live in a world based around visual storytelling. Schools and learning institutions are testament to this idea. Visual learning improves performance and memory retention.

In this digital age, consumers face information overload which we can attribute mainly to the development of the World Wide Web. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 72% of Australian households had home-internet-access and 78% of households had access to a computer. With all that information so readily available, we communicators need to compel and engage our audiences.
